Modesty- Why the Lord has told me to dress differently
Well I have been pondering why I have been called to dress modesty by God. I was reading a young woman's blog and she referenced Matthew 5:14-16 and I just happened to be reading Matthew anyway and God has used my Matthew study to show me why I have been called to modesty.
"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven." -Matthew 5:14-16
I have read this verse and over and over the past few days. And I have pondered what it means and I have seen that being modest does not only mean covering up our bodies. Modesty means for a christian young lady that she be set apart, like a city on a hill. Everyone should see that we don't dress modestly just because we have to, but that we have a desire to reflect our love for God with our outer appearance. This way one can see that we stand out like a city on a hill or like a lamp that shines brightly in darkenss. We should want people to take one look at us and say she is different or even say to themselves she is a christian. By dressing mdoestly we are not saying we are better than others, we are representing our Savior and saying God be glorifyed instead of myself being glorifyed. I want people to look at me in feminine modest dresses and say she is different. I don't want them to not even see the difference, I want people to ask me why I wear dresses and skirts and then be able to tell them why I am different from the way the world wants me to dress. I want to say that Jesus saved me and that they can be saved as well. I want to be modest, but at the same time I want people to say and see visualy that I am different.
In 1 Timothy 2:9-10 it says," likewise also that the women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness-with good works."
Now I have heard both women and men alike interprut this verse incorrectly from what I believe God is saying about not braiding hair or wear costly attire or jewels. He is not saying we can not braid our hair or wear jewelry, but he is saying He does not want a godly women to be looked at because of what she adorns her outer self with. He wants people to look at a godly woman because of her good works, just like in Matthew 5:16, Jesus he wants people to see our good works and then our heavenly Father may be glorified.
So by dressing modestly and by acting with glory to our King, others will see that we are a light and are different, because of our outer appearance and actions. So God has shown me that dressing modestly in dresses and skirts is pleasing to Him and is a way to glorify His Name.
To some this might not be a conviction of theres, they might not define wearing skirts and dresses needed to be modest or to glorify God, I am not pushing or saying you have to wear skirts and dresses, But I strongly believe that women should wear dresses and skirts because God defines men and women different from each other. In Deuteronomy 22:5 God says," A woman shall not wear a mans garment, nor shall a man wear a womans cloak, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord."
To me this is saying that we should not as women wear a man's clothing like pants, we should dress as women and feminine to define that we are women. I had never thought about this before until the Lord saved me 2 years ago, but I would encourage women out there to search God's word about dressing modestly and femininely if they do not already. Just pray and ask God to show you what He wants you to do in the area of dress.
I pray that many will seriously ponder and pray about dress, because its the first thing strangers, friends, and family see of us. They see our outward appearance and it should reflect God and not point to ourselves, but to Him.
For Christ and His convenants,
Rebecca

I think that's so awesome. You know, I really don't enjoy wearing boy clothes anyway, but I agree with you on your views of modesty, and what the Bible says about it. I also think we're called to stand out - in a good way - from the rest of the world. There's something so beautiful about modest femininity, something that most women no longer have. But I believe it can be reclaimed, and I'm glad we're two sisters in Christ that are trying to set a standard. :) Great job, and I applaud you for what you're doing.
@Chasing_Chastity - thanks Kate for the encouragement! Yes I am so happy to be friends with you and many other gals who also share my convictions, those who I only know online and in person! thanks for the encouragement that we are one in Him and that we are dressing for His glory alone instead of self glory!
In Christ,
Rebecca
Great post! Keep being a light on a hill!
